San Antonio Polo 501(c)3 Partners with Fiesta Commission to Present 3rd Annual Fiesta Kings Cup
Match Marks the Return of a San Antonio Fiesta Tradition
Its horses, adrenaline, and all the elegance Fiesta’s royal courts can muster on the emerald green polo pitch of Olmos Basin Park. The return of San Antonio Polo Club’s greatest annual celebration pits Team King Antonio against Team El Rey Feo, as well as teams representing other royal courts, in its 3rd annual rebirth of The Fiesta Kings Cup on April 23rd, 12-4pm at Olmos Basin Park.
The San Antonio Polo Club is the country’s longest continually running polo club, dating back to 1920. At that time, it was a highlight of fiesta season, where the horse rules on the roads and in sporting fun. Fiesta itself began in 1890 with horse-drawn carriages in parades filled with flowers and military, and kicking it all off was usually San Antonio’s favorite sporting event, a polo tournament at Brackenridge Park. After a sojourn of a few decades in the 80’s and 90’s, the San Antonio Polo Club rejuvenated the sport with a mission to preserve this part of the city’s history and help the city’s children with charity polo events.
Players from the San Antonio Polo Club, as well as visiting teams will meet again to complete in the Fiesta Kings Cup. In past tournaments, professional polo players from as far away as Australia Hawaii join local players like yours truly, as well as the Will Smith Foundation’s Susan Moulton and Shweiki Media’s Gal Shweiki . In 2016, four teams hit the pitch, representing King Antonio, El Rey Feo, the Cavaliers and the Consejos. Profits from the matchups are shared by the San Antonio Polo Club with children’s charities.
The event will be held at the Olmos Basin Park Sports Field located at 600 Devine Road in San Antonio (rain or shine, no refunds) and offer Premier Luxury V.I.P. Cabana Tents, Regular V.I.P Tents, as well as General Admission seating along the sidelines. Regular standing General Admission tickets are also available online at www.sanantoniopoloclub.org. Luncheon with limited beer and wine are included in all V.I.P. tickets. Admission to the private V.I.P. full bar is limited, but reservations can be made by calling 210-310-9866 as well. In the event of rain, ticket holders will receive free admission to another San Antonio Polo game later in the season. No refunds will be given.
Trophies will be presented by fiesta royalty on hand with the traditional cry of “Viva Fiesta”. Past Fiesta Kings and Queens are expected to be in attendance as well.
The San Antonio Polo currently offers polo games and fundraisers for other non-profit organizations. The mission of the San Antonio Polo Club is to preserve the historic significance of the sport in our area when polo was first introduced in 1876 by British officers who brought it to Bexar County, and to ensure the young and disadvantaged have an opportunity to learn the sport at low or no charge.
